Forever takes a little time…

By Chris Thomason and Stephanie Baillache

Things that last forever do seem to take a little longer to set-up – so, at long last (if you’ll excuse the pun), welcome to The Eternal Message blog!

Stephanie and I are the founders of SentForever and we want to share some of things that we find interesting, exciting, amazing and a sometimes a little bit weird with regard to SentForever’s business of allowing people to leave messages for the rest of eternity.

How did it all start? Well, some years ago we were discussing how the traditional greeting card seems to transitory in nature. You buy the standard picture with (or without) the standard greeting prose inside. Then you add your personalised words which may or may not fit with the standard prose. You send it and probably a week or so later it’s in the waste paper bin. So impersonal and so temporary.

Could a card be made to last longer we thought? We considered a card that had to be returned to the sender. Then a card that would be sent back and forwards for 10 years or more. Then we started thinking about a card that would last forever – literally. And the only way we thought this could happen would be if it was sent into deep space like some of those NASA Voyager probes.

Sending rockets up was a bit beyond most people’s budgets so we started thinking about transmitting radio waves into deep space. After many months of work with our good friends at British Telecom (BT) we developed a technology to transmit people’s personal messages into deep space where they will travel for the rest of eternity. Even though the signal does get weaker the farther it travels, it never actually stops going.

We transmit from BT’s historic earth station at Goonhilly in Cornwall, UK. This was once the largest satellite earth station in the world with 60 dishes and was originally built to track the very first satellites put into space in the early 1960’s.

Most of the messages we send are messages of love, including special messages of love for loved ones, celebratory messages for family, and remembrance messages for loved ones who have passed on.

We also transmit other interesting things into eternity too – but more of this later. If you had a chance to transmit something into eternity what would you send? Let us know, and perhaps we can make it happen for you.

So welcome to eternity!
